Corporate HistoryFrederic Sterry Smith, or Ric as he is known, began apprenticing in piano restoration in 1979 with Weigert's Piano Works, Micanopy, Florida under Steinway Technician and master craftsman, Ron Weigert. Ric picked up the intricacies and fine details of his craft quickly. His attention to detail, patience and perseverance would prove great assets in years to come.
On March 20, 1983, Sterry Piano Company opened in St. Augustine, Florida. In five years the company purchased the Trailways Bus terminal building expanding from 160 to over 6000sq’, adding five teaching studios, all acoustic instrument sales, service and instruction becoming the largest volume music store in the county.
Our vision from the onset is to provide superior service, offering quality care to each customer and for each instrument. Anna M. Smith, Co-Owner and Office Manager managed sales, purchasing and over ten in the faculty, in addition to teaching dozens of lessons each week.
The early years placed Sterry Piano Company in the shadow of Flagler’s Florida East-Coast Railway office towers on Malaga Street.
This fortuitous “reuniting of Flagler & Sterry” would prove an encouragement during challenging moments for the young entrepreneurs over the next five years. Historically, the railroad giant Henry Flagler and famous hotelier Frederic Sterry formed an enduring and profitable partnership nearly eighty years prior when, Flagler needed passengers for his trains and Sterry needed transportation to bring his hotel guests from the North East to hotels on the "Gold Coast" of south Florida.
Sterry Piano Company has serviced the local community and the South East from locations in Georgia and Florida; including many quality grand restorations for Cooper Music and Steinway in Atlanta.
From our inception we have matched personal integrity with uncompromising attention to detail.
