Plate Repair and Refitting

Cast Iron plates can weigh 300 to 600 pounds. They are heavy, awkward and difficult to remove and install.

After removing sediments, oils, and old wax the plate, Sterry Piano will clean, sand and resurface to plate. Three coats of gold dust suspended in clear lacquer are carefully applied to all top and side surfaces followed by two clear coats of gloss lacquer.

A minimum of one week is allowed for the new gold finish to cure prior to installing and detailing the plate.

In the gallery right, walk through the process with Frederic “Ric” Sterry Smith and his technicians.

Part 2: Plates detailed

Plates have numerous letters embossed when the plate was cast. A manufacturer will include the make and often the model with such information as patent dates and special awards won by this model and type of piano.

Sterry Piano artisans hand paint (or detail) these embossed letters. We add special information including the production number of the piano and specific model near the front of the piano (by the belly-rail), duplicating the manufacturer‘s size and font style.

In addition, we often sign our plates and may include the date of restoration.
